Kayaking & Paddleboarding in Turks and Caicos
Paddle through shallow mangrove channels, across the turquoise lagoon at Chalk Sound or out to quiet cays. Turks and Caicos has calm, clear water for every level, and plenty of wildlife to spot along the way.
- Best time: Year-round, on calm days with light wind
- Level: Easy to moderate; longer routes suit experienced paddlers
- Cost: Free kayaks at some resorts; rentals and guided tours low to mid price
- Best for: Families, wildlife spotting, photography
Kayaking and paddleboarding are two of the easiest ways to see the quieter side of Turks and Caicos. The water is shallow and clear, and many of the best spots are sheltered mangrove channels and lagoons where turtles, rays and small sharks are common.
On Providenciales, the most popular paddle is around Mangrove Cay, just off the northeastern end of the island. Its tidal channels are part of a protected nature reserve and are usually easy and safe to explore. On the southwest side, Chalk Sound National Park offers hundreds of small rocky islands in bright turquoise water.
The outer islands have even more room to roam. Bottle Creek Lagoon between North and Middle Caicos is the most popular paddle there, and South Caicos has Bell Sound. Guided eco-tours tend to give you much better wildlife sightings than simply paddling on the open ocean.
Where to go for kayaking & paddleboarding
1. Mangrove Cay and Leeward
Providenciales · Easy
The most popular paddle in the country. Shallow tidal channels wind through red mangroves, where you may see juvenile lemon and nurse sharks, small turtles, southern stingrays, starfish and conch.
2. Half Moon Bay
Providenciales · Moderate
A scenic beach, sandbar and sheltered lagoon at the eastern end of Princess Alexandra National Park, with baby lemon sharks in the shallows. The distance makes it challenging for beginners, so bring water and sun protection.
3. Chalk Sound National Park
Providenciales · Easy on calm days
A shallow turquoise lagoon dotted with hundreds of small rocky islands, some home to rock iguanas. Bonefish and barracuda are common, and you may spot a stingray or small lemon shark.
4. Frenchman's Creek and Pigeon Pond Nature Reserve
Providenciales · Experienced
The largest protected area on Providenciales. Its southern half is a maze of mangroves and shallow channels on the remote west coast, where lemon sharks, hawksbill turtles and conch live. Best visited with a local outfitter.
5. Bottle Creek Lagoon
North Caicos · Easy to moderate
An expansive shallow lagoon between North and Middle Caicos, and the most popular place to paddle on those islands.
6. Bell Sound and Plandon Cay Cut
South Caicos · Easy to moderate
Bell Sound National Park and the nearby Plandon Cay Cut area are a favorite kayaking and paddleboarding spot on South Caicos.

When to go
No set season; conditions depend on the wind
You can paddle year-round. The wind matters far more than the season: glassy, windless days are best, and wind under about 10 mph feels most pleasant. Rental outfitters may not let you out if it is too windy.
The trade winds usually blow from the east or southeast. Start your paddle into the wind so the trip home is easy, and use the sheltered sides of islands when it picks up.
Check the tide before exploring mangroves and wetlands. The tidal range is small, but shallow areas can leave you grounded, and currents run through the narrow channels between cays when the tide changes.
What to bring
- A life vest, worn at all times
- Plenty of drinking water
- Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses
- A dry bag for your phone and camera
- Water shoes for launching over rocks or shells
- A light long-sleeve top for longer paddles
Safety
- There are no lifeguards. Paddle within your ability and tell someone your plan.
- Mangrove Cay and Frenchman's Creek are nature reserves. Fishing and removing any natural or historical object are prohibited, and at Mangrove Cay it is illegal to disturb wildlife or take conch or lobster.
- In Chalk Sound National Park it is illegal to feed the rock iguanas or fly drones. Don't touch the iguanas.
- Watch your step on shore: sharp limestone ironshore and poisonous coral sumac trees are found around Chalk Sound.
- Currents are strongest in the middle of narrow channels between islands, especially as the tide changes.
- Frenchman's Creek is remote. Go with a local outfitter who knows the area, and don't leave valuables in the car.
Local tip
At Chalk Sound, the easiest place to launch is off Oleander Circle, about 3 miles along Chalk Sound Drive, close to the largest group of small islands.
Kayaking & Paddleboarding FAQ
Where is the best kayaking in Turks and Caicos?
Mangrove Cay, just off the northeastern end of Providenciales, is the most popular spot, with sheltered mangrove channels full of marine life. Chalk Sound National Park and Bottle Creek Lagoon between North and Middle Caicos are also excellent.
Can you kayak in Chalk Sound?
Yes. On calm days Chalk Sound is one of the finest paddling areas in the country. The water is shallow, and the lagoon is scattered with hundreds of small rocky islands.
What wildlife can you see while paddling?
Common sightings include turtles, southern stingrays, starfish, conch, upside-down jellyfish and juvenile lemon or nurse sharks. You may also see herons, egrets, pelicans and ospreys.
Are clear kayaks worth it?
Clear kayaks are popular for eco-tours and photos, but they give a somewhat limited view of what is under the surface. A paddleboard's extra height is often better for spotting turtles and rays.
Who offers kayaking & paddleboarding in Turks and Caicos?
Operators we list for kayaking & paddleboarding include Bamboo Tingz, Big Blue Collective, Caribbean Cruisin', Island Adventure TCI, Kite Provo (and SUP Provo), and 22 more. Each one's details are above.
