# History & Culture in Turks and Caicos

Loyalist plantation ruins, the National Museum in Cockburn Town, an 1852 lighthouse and the old salt ponds of Salt Cay tell the story of the islands.

- Best time: Any time of year; drier, cooler months are easier for outdoor ruins
- Level: Easy walking
- Cost: Low entry fees at most sites; Sapodilla Hill is free
- Best for: History lovers, families with older kids, and anyone taking a day trip to Grand Turk or Salt Cay

The islands' past is written in stone. Loyalist planters grew cotton here in the late 1700s, Bermudian salt rakers built the first towns, and sailors carved their names into the rocks while they waited for ships.

On Providenciales you can walk the ruins at Cheshire Hall and climb Sapodilla Hill to see what is left of the old carvings. North Caicos has Wade's Green, the ruins of the most successful plantation in local history.

For the fullest picture, take a day on Grand Turk. Cockburn Town is the oldest permanent settlement in the country, and the National Museum, the old prison and the lighthouse are all close by. Salt Cay, a short hop away, still has the walls and channels of its salt ponds.

### 2. Sapodilla Hill rock carvings

Built in 1852 after the wreck of the R.M.S. Medina, it was prefabricated in England from cast iron. You can walk the grounds and a cliff path, but not go inside.

### 9. Salt Cay salinas and Balfour Town

Bermudians began turning Salt Cay's shallow ponds into salinas in 1673, and salt ruled the island for about 250 years. Stone walls, channels, gates and windmill remains are still there, along with the Harriott White House.

### Wow A Tour

Lighthouse, salt ponds and National Museum tours, Beach days with lunch

Grand Turk tours to the lighthouse, the salt ponds and the National Museum, plus beach days with lunch and drinks.

## When to go

The museums and indoor sites work in any weather. For the plantations and cliff walks, January to April is drier and milder, while August and September are the hottest months.

Mosquitoes can be bad on North Caicos after rain, and October is often the worst month for the plantations there. Wear long sleeves and repellent at Wade's Green.

On Grand Turk, the National Museum and H.M. Prison are typically open on days when a cruise ship is in port, so check before you plan a day trip.

## What to bring

- Comfortable walking shoes for unpaved paths and uneven ruins
- Insect repellent and long sleeves for the North Caicos plantation
- Water, a hat and sunscreen; the ruins have little shade
- Cash, since some sites do not take cards
- A taxi, rental car or scooter for the Grand Turk Lighthouse, which is not walkable from town

## Safety

- Plantation ruins are old and uneven. Stay on the marked paths and do not climb on the walls.
- The coastal path at the Grand Turk Lighthouse runs along limestone cliffs; keep back from the edge.
- The lighthouse interior is closed to visitors.
- Salt Cay's donkeys and cattle roam freely. Give them space on the roads.
- The beaches near these sites have no lifeguards.

## Local tip

Before a day trip to Grand Turk, check whether a cruise ship is in port, since that is when the National Museum and H.M. Prison are typically open, and book a taxi or rental for the lighthouse, which is several miles from town.
