# Family & Rainy-Day Ideas in Turks and Caicos

Shallow, calm beaches for little ones, iguanas on Little Water Cay, easy snorkeling and a few good indoor stops for the odd rainy afternoon.

- Best time: Year-round; summer usually has the calmest seas
- Level: Easy
- Cost: Beaches free; small entry fees at museums; boat trips to Little Water Cay mid price
- Best for: Families with young kids, first-time snorkelers and rainy afternoons

Turks and Caicos is an easy place to travel with kids. The land is gentle too: there are no poisonous snakes, and the most dangerous insect you are likely to meet is a common paper wasp.

For young children, the south coast beaches of Providenciales are the best bet. Taylor Bay is shallow, usually calm and a little warmer than the north coast. Grace Bay and Leeward are deeper but have wide sand for castles and generally calm water.

Rain rarely settles in for long. The islands have one of the lowest average numbers of rainy days in the Caribbean, and it is seldom raining across a whole island all day. When it does, a museum, a gallery stop or a sheltered south coast beach will fill the gap.

## When to go

Calm, shallow beaches are good year-round. Summer usually brings calmer seas, while December to March tends to be windier.

When wind and waves pick up on the northeast coast, head to the south and west beaches such as Sapodilla Bay, Taylor Bay and Turtle Tail, which stay more sheltered.

The rainiest stretch runs from August to December, with May also a bit wetter. Forecasts often call for more rain than actually falls, and showers rarely cover the whole island all day.

## What to bring

- Reef-safe sunscreen, hats and rash guards
- Water shoes for rocky patches and shallows
- Snorkel gear in kids' sizes
- Buckets and spades for sandcastles
- Plenty of water and snacks; many beaches have no facilities
- A light rain jacket and an indoor plan for wet afternoons

## Safety

- There are no lifeguards on Turks and Caicos beaches. Keep children within arm's reach in the water.
- On Little Water Cay, stay on the boardwalk. Feeding the iguanas can bring fines and jail time, touching them is not allowed, and pets are banned.
- Two toxic plants grow here, coral sumac and rosary pea. Teach kids not to touch unfamiliar plants.
- Do not take small children to The Hole on Providenciales; there are no rails and the edge can crumble.
- Outer reefs at Smith's Reef are better for older kids and strong swimmers.

## Local tip

If the north shore is choppy or the sky looks gray, drive to Taylor Bay or Sapodilla Bay on the south coast. The water there is usually calmer, and a passing shower rarely lasts all day.

## Family & Rainy-Day Ideas FAQ

### What can we do with kids on a rainy day?

Try the free National Environmental Centre at The Bight, the National Museum & Heritage Site in Grace Bay, or the galleries and gift shops in the Grace Bay plazas. Rain seldom lasts all day, so a sheltered south coast beach may be open again by afternoon.

Bight Reef, off Bight Beach, is shallow and busy enough that someone is almost always around. Smith's Reef near Turtle Cove has more sea life, though its outer reefs are better for older kids.
