# Boat Trips & Island Hopping in Turks and Caicos

A day on the water takes you to the small cays between Providenciales and North Caicos: Iguana Island, Half Moon Bay, sandbars at low tide and a reef stop on the way. Here is where the boats go and the rules to know.

- Best time: Any calm day; your captain will pick destinations to suit the wind and sea
- Level: Easy; suits all ages, though snorkel stops need basic swimming
- Cost: Shared trips mid price; private charters high; Little Water Cay has a small entry fee
- Best for: Families, groups and anyone who wants beaches, snorkeling and wildlife in one day

Most boat trips leave from Providenciales and head east into the Caicos Cays, a string of small islands running toward North Caicos. A typical day mixes a snorkel stop, a beach or sandbar and a visit to the rock iguanas on Little Water Cay.

You can join a shared half-day or full-day trip, go out on a sailboat or catamaran, take a sunset cruise or book a private charter that goes where the weather allows. Trips on the south side head for small beaches and shallow reefs along the Caicos Banks.

On Grand Turk, boats run out to Gibbs Cay to meet the stingrays. On the smaller islands, options are fewer and often run by local fishermen who know the water well.

## Where to go for boat trips & island hopping

### 1. [Little Water Cay (Iguana Island)](https://www.sastci.com/beaches/leeward-beach)

Providenciales · Easy

A small cay just off Leeward that is a sanctuary for the endangered Turks and Caicos rock iguana, managed by the National Trust. Walk the boardwalk trails and watch the iguanas; never feed or touch them.

### 2. Half Moon Bay

Providenciales · Easy

The beach and sandbars joining Little Water Cay to Water Cay, with a sheltered lagoon of clear, shallow water on the south side. One of the most popular stops.

### 3. Water Cay

Providenciales · Easy

An uninhabited, undeveloped cay with a long white-sand beach on its north coast framed by low limestone cliffs. Stay back from the unstable cliffs and sea caves.

### 4. Pine Cay and Sand Dollar Cove

Providenciales · Easy

Pine Cay is private, but boats stop at Sand Dollar Cove at the northeast end of its beach. At low tide, small sandbars rise out of the calm water here.

### 5. Fort George Cay

Providenciales · Easy to moderate

A national park and historic site where cannons from an old fort lie in the shallows off the north side. Its southwest tip has a long sand spit and shifting sandbars near Pine Cay.

### 6. Leeward Reef

Providenciales · Intermediate

The most visited snorkel stop on boat trips, on the barrier reef near Leeward, with sea fans and plenty of reef fish.

### 7. [South coast and the Caicos Banks](https://www.sastci.com/beaches/sapodilla-bay)

Providenciales · Easy to moderate

Trips from the Sapodilla Bay area visit small beaches and shallow reefs such as West Harbour Bluff, Turtle Rock and Bay Cay. Turtle Rock can be choppy in the trade winds.

### 8. Gibbs Cay

Grand Turk · Easy

A small uninhabited cay about a mile off Grand Turk, in a national park, where southern stingrays glide in whenever a boat lands. Look but don't touch or feed them.

## When to go

Boats run all year, but the weather decides the day. Wind and waves change what each spot is like, so trust your captain if they suggest a different stop.

Plan sandbar visits for low tide, when the sand is exposed in the shallow water off Fort George Cay and Pine Cay.

Winter is the busy season and trips fill up, so book ahead. Glowworm cruises are timed to the glowworm displays near the full moon.

## What to bring

- Swimsuit, towel, hat and sunglasses
- Reef-safe sunscreen or a rash guard
- A waterproof bag for phones and cameras
- An underwater camera for the snorkel stops
- Snacks and water if you are going on a private or self-guided trip to the cays
- Cash or card for the Little Water Cay entry fee if your trip doesn't include it

## Safety

- There are no lifeguards on the cays or sandbars.
- On Little Water Cay, stay on the boardwalks. Feeding or touching the iguanas is strictly prohibited, and pets, fishing, shell collecting, litter and fires are not allowed.
- The channel between Leeward and Little Water Cay has currents; take care if you kayak or paddle over.
- It is illegal to take coral, sand, shells or wildlife, alive or dead, from the national parks, and all fishing is banned there, including conch and lobster.
- At Gibbs Cay, do not touch, feed or lift the stingrays. Watch your step in the shallows; a visitor who slipped was injured by a ray's barb.
- Don't take or damage the cannons or other artifacts at Fort George Cay.
- If you rent a boat: jet skis are not allowed in protected areas, the speed limit in national marine parks is 15 mph, and slowing to 5 mph within about 330 feet of shore is strongly advised. Never anchor on coral or seagrass.
- Keep off the sand dunes and watch for turtle and bird nesting areas on the uninhabited cays.

## Local tip

Book a morning trip if you can. If the weather turns, you still have time to rebook later in your stay.
